Overview Ngorongoro Walking Safaris: A Day on the Rim

A walking safari in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area offers an intimate and adventurous way to explore one of Africa's most iconic landscapes. While the vast majority of visitors experience the Ngorongoro Crater from the inside of a game viewing vehicle on the crater floor, the rim walk provides an entirely different perspective.

Walking safaris allow you to immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and smells of the African bush at eye level. Unlike game drives, you can hear birds calling, insects humming, and the rustle of wildlife moving through the undergrowth. All walks are accompanied by an armed ranger and a local Maasai guide, ensuring both safety and a rich cultural experience. The slower pace allows for a more intimate exploration, offering insights into animal tracks, insect life, plant species, and traditional Maasai knowledge of the land.

The rim walk is a great way to explore the area's biodiversity and geology. You will walk through dense montane forest, with panoramic views of the 260-square-kilometre caldera floor below and access to the highland zone's unique ecosystem. The Ngorongoro Crater rim is at an elevation of about 2,300 metres above sea level, and on clear days, you can see the active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai to the north. This activity is ideal for travelers seeking a more intimate connection with the wilderness and a break from the confines of a safari vehicle.
